In this case the victim's husband called 911 to report that his wife had fallen down the stairs, struck her head, and was not breathing. The couple had been separated and the wife was moving out. When help arrived, the victim showed signs of having been in a struggle. Her clothing was peppered with plaster dust from the sheet rock wall that had been staved-in. Her finger nails were torn off. Multiple bruises were noticed on her back and head. A fresh laceration was found above the victim's right eye. It showed no signs of bleeding in spite of being located in a vessel rich area.
Dr. Goldberg became suspicious of the husband's story when the autopsy examination showed signs of strangulation (Punctate Hemorrhage) and blunt trauma . In addition, the crime scene did not correlate with the husband's description of the terminal event. The pattern which manifested at autopsy was consistent with the use of a choke hold applied from behind, and the use of a knee as a leverage point for the choke. Lastly, after CPR was begun, the aforementioned laceration began to bleed; underscoring it's post-cardiac arrest time sequence.
After a two week trial, the victim's husband was found guilty, and was sentenced to twenty plus years in prison for the strangulation death of his wife. Post sentencing, the husband admitted to the events as contained in the forensic analysis. Dr. Goldberg was employed as a defense expert.
